Life imitates art

Jacana Media, publishers of David Dison’s political thriller, “Death in the New Republic” confronted their author over events at SAA earlier this year.

“We think you put this work up as fiction just so you could get us to publish it as a novel,” Jacana accused Dison.

“I beg your pardon?” retorted the normally laconic author.

“Dison, do not feign innocence. Death in the New Republic covers the smuggling of three bags of dagga to London on SAA by the sister of an SAA air hostess on one of her flights – correct?”

Dison nodded, quizzically.

“Each bag was worth 160 thousand pounds sterling, the flight landed at Heathrow, and the SAA gang rumbled – correct?

“Is someone accusing me of plagiarism here? Because if that’s so I’ll have them gutted in every forum in the land. I researched that background meticulously and acknowledged all my sources in the book, as you well know” Dison responded menacingly.

“Not plagiarism Dison, misrepresentation, purporting fact to be fiction. Why, even the bust, the smuggling operation, the co-operation of the SA security forces and the British, the link to the Security police and to our own supercop, the involvement of the SAA crew, the cover of the book – this is no coincidence!”

Dison was last seen in the West Street magistrates court ranting about his book coming out last year, and how he would sue all the bastards who falsely accuse him of blurring the lines between fact and fiction.

In any event, Jacana have instructed all the good bookshops still stocking Death in the New Republic to move it to their non-fiction shelves.

Ha, ha! Which way does it go? Art imitates life? Life imitates art? What goes around comes around?

David, instead of consulting a good attorney, buy some incense sticks and a crystal ball, and set up a nifty side-line as a psychic. You are clearly a soothsayer of note.

Helen, great suggestion. I've got the crystal ball. Re the incense sticks, I'm
waiting for SAA from London to land at OR Tambo. They should be accompanying a bag of dagga I'm expecting.

Dr Chutzpah, my psychic powers detect that you might well be the evil mastermind behind the diabolical Heathrow/OR Tambo trade, masquerading behind freedom of speech fundamentalism - your support for the Dutch hemp trader Wilders reveals your true intent. Kindly ensure that ccompany all contraband from here on in.

Except for Breyten Breytenbach, the rest were unrecognisable. But very funny, Herr Doctor,ja remember the days when nobody had ever met a nice Seffafrican. Brilliant clip doc. I hear SABC's got a Seffafrican spitting image series in development. Perhaps that'll lure Breyten back?

I loved the whole thing, catatonically bored barman and all. An SABC spitting image series? Glorious prospect, but I'll believe it when I see it.
